Attorney General and Deputy Premier of British Columbia, Niki Sharma with her hard work and dedication has made our community proud. As a prominent lawyer and community activist, Ms. Sharma has done an excellent job in advocating services for the needy, especially in Downtown Vancouver East. In addition to that, she has been actively involved in many other crucial issues affecting British Columbians. After the last provincial election, Sharma was elevated to the position of Attorney General and Deputy Premier by Premier David Ebby. Since assuming these two very responsible positions, she has been working hard in serving the people of British Columbia with dedication.

On Sunday, May 3, Niki Sharma, accompanied by Parliamentary Secretary for Anti Racism, Amna Shah, visited India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, #5 Road, Richmond. They were welcomed by President Mohan Singh Sandhu, Secretary Balwant Sanghera and some other members of the Gurdwara management. After a brief tour of the Gurdwara premises, they paid a brief visit to the neighboring Subramanyam Swami Hindu Temple. This was part of their visit to Richmond’s Highway to Heaven. They returned to the Gurdwara Sahib and paid obeisance in the Darwar(Prayer) Hall and enjoyed the melodious kirtan by Gurdwara’s kirtani Jatha before bringing greetings to the congregation.

Niki Sharma mentioned that it is due to the sacrifices of our ancestors that today, members of our community are very successful in politics, business, education, technology, media, sports, and so many other areas. She paid a special tribute to the Sikh community for their hard work and sacrifices and congratulated the congregation for the month of April being recognized as the Sikh Heritage Month. After enjoying langar in the langar Hall, Sharma and Shah had a very productive meeting with the Gurdwara management committee members. As a token of appreciation, the management committee led by Chairperson Mrs. Kashmir Kaur Johal presented Niki Sharma with a plaque recognizing her service to the community.

Then, it was time to visit other places of worship. A prominent member of our Gurdwara congregation, Kanwarjit Singh Sandhu, was kind enough to coordinate these visits to various places of worship along our Highway to Heaven. In the meantime, Sharma and Shah had a very productive meeting with members of the Highway to Heaven Association. The AG and Deputy Premier explained in detail the proposed legislation to protect places of worship from protests. She also sought public input. There was a good discussion on this subject. Amna Shah gave a summary of the government’s initiatives in combatting racism in our province. Before departing, Sharma and Shah both thanked the Gurdwara management and members of the Highway to Heaven Association for a very warm welcome and wonderful hospitality.
