Richmond Multicultural Community Services (RMCS) had a very enjoyable celebration of Vaisakhi, a very popular South Asian festival, at Caring Place, on Friday, April 29. Mayor Malcolm Brodie, along with Councillors Chak Au, Bill McNulty, Carol Day and Andy Hobbs joined the celebration. Also, Steveston – Richmond East MP Parm Bains, Richmond South Centre MLA Henry Yao graced the occasion. Richmond North Centre MLA Teresa Wat and Richmond Centre MP Wilson Mio sent their greetings. Mayor Brodie, Henry Yao and Parm Bains addressed the audience and talked about the significance of Vaisakhi in the Canadian context. Former RMCS President Balwant Sanghera shared his thoughts about Vaisakhi with the audience. Sanghera mentioned that Vaisakhi signifies the start of the harvesting season in India. Also it coincides with the creation of the Khalsa (The Pure One) by the tenth and the last Guru of the Sikh faith, Guru Gobind Singh ji. Now Vaisakhi has become an international celebration by the South Asian community around the globe. This celebration included turban tying, entertainment, Meet and Greet and delicious South Asian food. The RMCS staff led by Ashok Rattan did an excellent job in organizing this celebration.
