Consul General of India visits Mahatma Gandhi statue in Honolulu

The Board members of the Gandhi International Institute for Peace (GIIP) warmly welcomed Dr. K. Srikar Reddy, Consul General of India, San Francisco and his wife, Pratima Reddy, at the site of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Waikiki, Honolulu on January 23, 2026. Dr. K. Srikar Reddy honored Mahatma Gandhi by draping his statue with a traditional Hawaiian lei.

Consul General Dr. K. Srikar Reddy visited Honolulu, Hawaii, as part of a small delegation from San Francisco Consular Corps from January 21 to January 23, 2026.  During the visit, he attended the opening of 2026 Legislative session and met with Governor Josh Green, and Ms. Sherry Menor-McNamara, President and CEO of the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce and Legislators.

Dr. Raj Kumar, founder of GIIP joined Dr. Reddy at a meeting with Honolulu Mayor, Rick Blangiardi on January 22, 2026.  Deputy Managing Director, Krishna Jayaram, Ame’lie Saunois, International Liaison from the Mayor’s Office of Culture and Art were also present at the meeting.

The visit provided an opportunity for Dr. Reddy to exchange views with various stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in tourism, trade, investment, and people-to-people ties between India and Hawaii.

Dr. Kumar briefed Mayor Blangiardi about GIIP’s mission to raise awareness about peace and nonviolence in Honolulu and around the state. GIIP celebrates Mahatma Gandhi Day on October 2nd each year at the Gandhi statue outside of Honolulu Zoo. Later that same day, Dr. Reddy and Dr. Kumar also met with the Executive Director, Dr. Rob York, and Carl Baker at Pacific Forum International.  

GIIP promotes peace and nonviolence from the “Land of Aloha” to the rest of the world through education, community events, and international engagements. GIIP initiated Senate Bill- SB 332 which was signed into Act 5 by former Governor, David Y. Ige, on April 10, 2015 making Hawaii the first state in the U.S. to proclaim October 2nd as “Mahatma Gandhi Day”.
