This event is part of the continuing efforts of the Hawaii-born the Gandhi International Institute for Peace (GIIP) to further the cause of peace and non-violence. It arose in response to the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Ever since, its members have been raising awareness about peace and nonviolence, hosting Arun Gandhi in 2011, who continues his grandfather's work as an advocate for world peace, and initiating the process that led to Hawaii Senate Bill, SB 332 establishing October 2 as “Mahatma Gandhi Day in Hawaii in 2015. GIIP will be celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday for the 17th consecutive year through this event. It has also supported the publication of two books: Gandhi’s Wisdom for You, published by GIIP in 2015 and also Children as Teachers of Peace and Aloha in 2018. Its most recent activity was hosting India’s Ambassador to United States His Excellency, Taranjit Singh Sandhu and his naval escort, who draped leis at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Waikiki in July 2022.
The GIIP is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in Hawaii.
