Mahatma Gandhi’s statue outside the Indian Embassy in Washington Vandalised

Mahatma Gandhi’s statue outside the Indian Embassy in Washington DC, has been vandalised by local miscreants with graffiti and spray painting.

Between June 2 and 3 night, Mahatma Gandhi's statue desecrated with graffiti and spray painting. The Police in consultation with the Diplomatic Security Service and National Park Police visited the site and are conducting inquiries. 

Mahatma Gandhi’s statue was a gift from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.:

  • The statue of Mahatma Gandhi, was installed on a triangular island along Massachusetts Avenue, in front of the Embassy of India, Washington, D.C.on September 16, 2000 during a state visit of Indian Prime Minister in the presence of US President Bill Clinton Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The US Congress passed a bill in 1998 authorising the Government of India to establish a memorial to Gandhi on US federal land in the District of Columbia on the 50th anniversary of Indian independence in 1947

US Ambassador to India, Ken Juster tweeted an apology.
