Final witnesses to depose in Air India trial

Vancouver, 17 November, 2003

The government prosecutors will present their final witnesses at the Canadian court hearing the case against Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri, who have been charged in the 1985 bombing of an Air-India jet that killed 329 people on board.

The key witness, a woman described as Malik's former lover, is expected to complete her testimony early this week and her identity has not been revealed for legal reasons.

Nick Rowe, an intelligence agent who dealt with the woman, is also expected to depose and will be among the last few witnesses to testify against Malik and Bagri. The prosecutors are expected to begin the presentation of forensic evidence against the pair soon.

Malik and Bagri have been charged with eight counts of murder and conspiracy in the bombings, which also claimed the lives of two Japanese baggage handlers.

The unidentified woman also told the court that Malik, a millionaire businessman, confessed his role in the bombings to her on two separate occasions. Apparently, she and her family have received death threats and have been under police protection since she was fired from her job by Malik in 1997.
