Articulating the predicament of Punjabi woman in eternal
woe, the Jangi Theatre staged their maiden play at the Tagore Theatre
today. Directed by Ranker, the play Punjaban
Kyon Roti hai in fact
is a revelation of all time relevant issues concerning woman emancipation
as elucidated in Surina Walia Choudhrys book The psyche
of a Punjabi woman.
Presented through narrative and dramatic sequences
the play employs a modest plot only to lay stress on the best known
chronic problems of dowry, female foeticide and female disparity in
the male dominated society which has yet to find a solution.
Endowed with a vision as the writers are, a storywriter
intends to pen a classic and finds the most suitable theme in the ordeals
of a girl symbolic of a Punjabi woman. Allured to the charms of foreign
living, she marries an NRI in haste and repents later. On the contrary,
another married Punjabi deserts his noble wife with a motive to rejoice
the western wine and woman. The play brings to fore NRIs demanding dowry
and women forced to go in for abortion. It goes on to strongly condemn
this evil of adversely affecting the womanhood in all cases.
The woman, already caught in a dilemma, seeks explanation to the unanswered
questions from the tyrant called time.
The short play with rich content had experienced as
well as young artists including Gaurav Sharma, Bhavana Joshi, Surinder
Saini, Ashwani Savan, Pardip Srivastav and Sonika Bhatia in the lead
cast.
