Employees In India Steal $350,000
from Citibank Customers In New York
Mumbai, April 15, 2005
NRIpress
Police said the employees
allegedly stole customers' personal account information
from Citibank New York and transferred around $350,000
to fake accounts in Pune, India
Sanjay Jadhav, the assistant
commissioner of police, said about $23,000 (1 million
Indian rupees) of the fraud money has already been
recovered. The workers left their jobs of Indian call
center MphasiS last December. Some of those arrested
were employees of Msource, Kalyaninagar. Police sources
said the alleged mastermind, Ivan Samuel Thomas (30)
of Sangamnagar, Old Sangvi, who claims to be an MBA
degree holder, is an exemployee of Msource.
This case leeds a major
blow to the Indian BPO (business process outsourcing)
industry. All North American and global corporations,
who are on the verge of signing outsourcing contracts
with Indian firms, will halt their decision. They
must think 100 times before sending sensitive jobs
to India.
Opinions:
Ahh...., the joys of handing your sensitive information
to some company outside the United States. I have an
idea, lets give Social Security numbers, bank account
access and enough information to steal millions of people's
identities to a country that has a massive amount of
corruption every where. I expect to see many more incidents
of things like this.... Ashok. NYC
Most of the Indian outsourcing companies have
a short term strategy. They don't understand the security
system, means don't spend money for the security of
their clients. Believe it or not, I know that it will
happen one day. I love to see India shinning but it
is not going to happened unless our politicians, IASs,
IPSs and judges do nott change their habits. Most
of the NRIs are cheated or robbed one or other way
by our own people in India but they still forget it
because they love their mother land . KEEP IN MIND,
foreign companies will never tolerate it and they
will not send you sensitive jobs to
India....Amanprit Khosla, Vancouver
