General Motors invests $21 mn in R&D centre
outside US in Bangalore

 

Michigan, March 15, 2004

General Motors Automaker has set up a R&D centre in Bangalore by investing $21 million. The 40,000-sq-foot facility, which opened in September of 2003, is General Motors' first automotive research laboratory outside the US. The centre currenly employs 230 engineers, which will increase to 400 by the year-end.

The GM has also tied up with 21 institutes, including IITs and IISc. It will be a design and engineering centre, which will support an auto manufacturing presence not only in India but also the Asian region." "Asia-Pacific is a key regional growth market, and our science lab in India further enables us to remain the world leader in product innovation."

As with its lab in Michigan, General Motors plans to recruit globally to ensure it has a diverse workforce, which in turn will lead to diverse innovation.
