US Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has signed a 15-month promotional contract with Vijender Singh, who is a WBO Asia Pacific and Oriental super middle weight champion, and has a 10-0 record after turning professional in 2015, including seven knockouts. He represented India in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

Vijender Singh’s American dream and targets world title in 2019 after signing with legendary promoter Bob Arum.Vijender Singh belongs a very small village in Haryana and last week he flew first-class from India to Los Angles, USA. He expects to make his US debut in next three months.

 

Robert Arum, 86, is a boxing promoter and businessman and an American lawyer. He is the founder and CEO of Top Rank, a professional boxing promotion company based in Las Vegas. He also worked for the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York in the tax division during his legal career before moving into boxing promotion.

 

Arum became a vice-president and secretary of Muhammad Ali's promotion company. Arum began promoting fights with Muhammad Ali’s heavyweight title defence against George Chuvalo in 1966. He became a driving force behind the sport, rivaling Don King. Arum organized superfights like Marvin Hagler vs. Roberto Durán and Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns.   • At the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, he defeated Carlos Góngora of Ecuador 9–4 in the quarterfinals which garnered him a bronze medal—the first ever Olympic medal for an Indian boxer.
  • Vijender was given a number of awards, including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award—India's highest sporting honour and Padma Shri the fourth highest civilian honour.In 2009, he participated at the World Amateur Boxing Championships where he won the bronze medal. In the same year, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) announced Vijender as the top-ranked boxer in its annual middleweight category list with 2800 points.

  • Vijender Singh was born in a Jat family on 29 October 1985 in Kaluwas village, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Bhiwani,  Haryana. His father, Mahipal Singh Beniwal, is a bus driver with the Haryana Roadways, while his mother is a homemaker. His father drove extra hours for overtime pay, for Vijender and his elder brother Manoj's education.
  • Vijender did his primary schooling in Kaluwas, secondary schooling in Bhiwani, finally receiving a bachelor's degree from Vaish College, Bhiwani. In 1990, boxer Raj Kumar Sangwan got the Arjuna Award: so the craze for boxing in India increased. The sport became one of the main job avenues in India. In order to ensure a better life for their poor family, Vijender decided to learn boxing.
  • Vijender was inspired by his elder brother Manoj, a former boxer himself, to join the sport of boxing. After Manoj succeeded in entering the Indian Army in 1998 with his boxing credentials, he decided to support Vijender financially so he could continue his boxing training.Vijender's parents decided to not pressurise him to continue his studies, as they felt that he had a talent and passion for boxing. For Vijender, boxing quickly grew from an interest and passion to a career choice.
