On Thursday Aug 08, 2024, the Indian Men’s Hockey team made history by winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, lifting the spirits of over 1.4 billion Indians after a few days of setbacks. Following this victory, veteran goalkeeper and former captain PR Sreejesh announced his retirement from the sport.

Harmanpreet Singh, Captain of Indian Hockey team played a crucial role, scoring both goals as India came from behind to defeat Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match. Harmanpreet’s goals in the 30th and 33rd minutes, both from penalty corners, overturned an early lead secured by Spain’s captain Marc Miralles, who scored with a penalty stroke in the 18th minute.

India’s quick comeback showcased their mental strength, securing another place on the podium at the world’s premier sporting event. This victory comes just three years after they ended a 41-year Olympic medal drought by winning bronze in Tokyo.

Spain struck first through Miralles in the opening quarter, but the Indian captain rallied his team, leveling the score in the second quarter. Harmanpreet’s decisive goal in the third quarter put India ahead, and they maintained their slim lead despite facing pressure and late attacks from the Spanish team, eventually claiming victory.

This win provided a near-perfect send-off for PR Sreejesh, who had announced his retirement from international hockey before the Olympics. The 36-year-old goalkeeper delivered several outstanding saves throughout the tournament, leaving a lasting impact in the final game of his distinguished 18-year career.

This bronze medal is India’s second consecutive Olympic podium finish after Tokyo 2020 and their 13th overall at the Summer Games. As the most successful hockey team in Olympic history, India has now secured 8 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals. This achievement also marks the first time since the 1968 and 1972 Games that India has won back-to-back Olympic medals.
