NRI Raj Sidpara, a 50-year-old, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Taranjit Riaz, at her Leicester home. The attack occurred in the early hours of May 6, leaving Riaz fatally injured.

Leicester Crown Court heard that Sidpara, who had a history of violent behavior, launched a vicious assault on Riaz, punching, kicking, and stamping on her as she lay defenseless. The assault caused extensive injuries, including bleeding on the brain, 20 broken ribs, and severe bruising.

Judge William Harbage, sentencing Sidpara to life imprisonment with a minimum of 20 years and 162 days, described the attack as "cruel and ruthless." The court was told that Sidpara had left Riaz for dead, removed his blood-stained shoes, and gone to sleep. By the time he called emergency services the following day, Riaz was already unresponsive and cold.

CCTV footage from earlier that night showed Sidpara appearing angry with Riaz, who was intoxicated. He later claimed she had collapsed due to her own drinking, denying responsibility for her death. However, the judge dismissed his version of events, stating Sidpara’s lack of memory was a fabrication, and emphasized his refusal to explain the motive behind the attack.
Sidpara’s history of violence against women played a significant role in the case. The court heard he had 24 prior convictions for 46 offenses, including threats to kill, harassment, and assaulting former partners. In 2022, he was convicted of a violent attack on another woman and threatening to petrol bomb her home.

A statement from Riaz’s brother, Balraj Chagger, highlighted the devastating impact of the crime on their family. He described Riaz, affectionately known as "Taz," as a loving and generous person who sought happiness and purpose in life. "She deserved every part of that future," he said, lamenting the tragedy of her life being cut short.

Judge Harbage concluded that Sidpara’s actions were both deliberate and unprovoked, reflecting a pattern of anger and cruelty. The case underscores the need for vigilance against domestic violence and the enduring impact such crimes have on victims and their families.
