The parents of Captain Anshuman Singh, who perished in a Siachen fire in July 2023, are urging the government to revise the Indian Army’s ‘next of kin’ (NOK) policy. According to current regulations, financial assistance is directed to the spouse of deceased personnel, rather than the parents, once the service member is married.

Captain Singh, who was awarded the posthumous Kirti Chakra, the second-highest peacetime gallantry award, had his parents, Ravi Pratap Singh and Manju Singh, expressing dissatisfaction with the policy. They noted that their daughter-in-law has left their home and has received the majority of the benefits, leaving them with only a photo of their son.

Ravi Pratap Singh has spoken with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh about the issue, emphasizing that the current NOK criteria are flawed. He stated that their daughter-in-law did not remain with them, and they are left with nothing but a photo of their son.

Recently, Smriti Singh, the deceased soldier’s wife, and Manju Singh received the Kirti Chakra from President Droupadi Murmu. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has promised to raise the issue with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Singhs hope to prevent other families from facing similar hardships in the future. Captain Anshuman Singh, who served with the 26 Punjab as a medical officer, was stationed in the Siachen Glacier area when the tragedy occurred.
