Singaporean Air Force Regular Men Sentenced to Jail for Phishing Attacks Targeting Victims' Intimate Images.

K Eshwaran, a 26-year-old Republic of Singapore Air Force regular, received an 11-month jail sentence on May 15 for orchestrating phishing attacks aimed at accessing multiple women’s intimate images over a span of two years.

Between January 2019 and November 2021, Eshwaran utilized an illicit website offering phishing services to breach his victims’ accounts, where he sought compromising images for his personal gratification.

The prosecution revealed that Eshwaran went as far as impersonating his victims to solicit intimate images from their contacts. Despite being under investigation, he persisted in his criminal activities, targeting another woman in a phishing attack in January 2023.

Pleading guilty to 10 charges under the Computer Misuse Act, Eshwaran admitted to unauthorized access to his victims’ social media accounts. Twenty-one additional charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Eshwaran's modus operandi involved registering on a website to gain unauthorized access to social media accounts, then sending phishing links to people he knew, luring them into clicking. Once clicked, victims were directed to a simulated login page where their credentials were captured.

The prosecution detailed Eshwaran’s use of a "hacking method" to target victims by entering their email addresses into the illicit website, generating potential login credentials.

Upon accessing victims' accounts, Eshwaran scoured for intimate images. He even impersonated account holders to request intimate images from their online contacts, particularly those he believed were romantically involved with the victims.

One victim, a 24-year-old woman, received a phishing link from Eshwaran in January 2019, leading to the compromise of her Facebook account. Eshwaran proceeded to contact six of her associates under the guise of the victim, attempting to procure intimate images.

Following suspicion of hacking, the victim reported the incident to the police in May 2019, leading to Eshwaran's apprehension.

Eshwaran's bail was set at $18,000, and he is scheduled to commence his sentence on June 19 at the State Courts.
