On Sunday, February 16, a U.S. military aircraft landed in Amritsar carrying 110+ deported Indians as part of a continued crackdown on illegal immigration under the Trump administration. This marked the third batch of deportations in recent weeks. Among the deportees were individuals from various states, including 44 from Haryana, 33 from Gujarat, 31 from Punjab, and others from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. The group included 19 women, 14 minors, and two infants.
The deportees arrived under tight security and were taken to their respective destinations after undergoing necessary immigration formalities. The local authorities ensured transportation and support for those from Punjab and Haryana, while others were flown to Delhi before being sent to their native regions.
This mass deportation has sparked outrage, particularly after claims emerged that Sikh deportees were denied the right to wear turbans during the journey, prompting strong condemnation from Sikh organizations. Many deportees shared stories of being deceived by agents who promised a better life in the U.S. but led them into dangerous, illegal routes. The emotional toll of this experience is compounded by the financial hardships families face after mortgaging land and assets to fund the risky migration.
Punjab’s NRI Affairs Minister, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, expressed his anger over the inhumane treatment of the deportees, particularly the shackling of individuals during their deportation, and vowed to take action against the agents who exploited them.
