WOMEN’S HEALTH SCREENINGS, TESTING FOR A HEALTHIER FUTURE

Norwalk, California, Oct. 25:
Assemblymember Tony Mendoza (D-Norwalk)
Communications Director

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women and one of the deadliest cancers of all.

It is an epidemic that will strike one out of 15 California women. This year, approximately 5,000 California women will die of breast cancer and nearly 22,000 new women will be diagnosed with the disease. However, breast cancer numbers have been declining since the early 1990s. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.

Unfortunately, only half of California's women have had a breast exam within the past two years. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a good time to remind women about the importance of regular health screenings. Breast exams, glucose and hypertension check-ups are advisable on a yearly basis; especially for anyone with a family history of diabetes and cancer. And everyone should have dental exams annually and eye exams every other year.

For this reason, I am joining forces with health care providers during a free Women’s Health and Wellness Fair on Friday, November 5th. Women of all ages are encouraged to attend my event to be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Norwalk Corporate Plaza, 12501 E. Imperial Highway in Norwalk. The free health screenings and educational information will be on a wide range of topics that include breast health, diabetes, hypertension, health screenings, glucose and blood pressure screenings, pregnancy tests, ultra sounds, sexually transmitted disease and vision exams provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Whittier Health Center); Birth Choice; Southern California University of Health Sciences, California Family Health Council; Planned Parenthood; California Family Health Council; Alta Med Health Services; Grandparents as Parents, Health Net and Artesia Lion’s Club.

By getting the right health services, screenings, and treatments, California women are taking steps to increase the chance of living a longer, healthier life. Age, health and family history, lifestyle choices (i.e. what you eat, how active you are, whether you smoke), and other important factors impact what and how often you need services and screenings.

Again, please join me at my Women’s Health and Wellness Fair on Friday, November 5th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join me in protecting yourselves, your wives, mothers, grandmothers and other family members from all the various chronic diseases.

I invite you to start an awareness campaign in your church, workplace, school or civil group to encourage other women to join my Women’s Health and Wellness Fair. I invite you to make an appointment for a check-up or health screening with local doctors and non profit-organizations. It's time to take charge of your health! Schedule an appointment with your health care provider to discuss what preventive health services you need and when you need them.
