Serving Our Communities and Those in Need

Anaheim, California, January 18, 2010
By Anaheim Mayor Pro Tem Harry Sidhu

Today, January 18, 2010, we observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.

Dr. Martin Luther King said, “Life’s urgent and most pressing question is, what are you doing for others?” In his words, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” Through understanding the importance of serving and doing for others, we meaningfully give back to our communities and address important issues of concern.

In the past week, we have witnessed the catastrophic impact of the devastating earthquake that struck the country of Haiti – the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. I encourage support of the humanitarian efforts that are underway during this time of crisis that has worldwide impact.

Today’s holiday observance provides all of us with the opportunity to reflect upon who we are as a community and to recognize the true values of freedom, democracy, public service, and cultural diversity – working together to improve life in our communities.

It has been, and continues to be, an honor to give back to this great country, and those who have given me so much, through public service. It is my goal to continue to make a truthful, living difference as an elected official and businessman helping others.

In sincere appreciation and gratitude,
