NRI Ashwin Ramaswami, a 24-year-old Stanford graduate and former Chief Technology Officer of The Stanford Daily, launched his campaign for Georgia’s 48th State Senate district in Dec 2023. If elected, he would make history as Georgia’s first NRI state senator. Since declaring his candidacy, Ramaswami has raised nearly $900,000 and received endorsements from prominent figures including U.S. Representative Lucy McBath, Senator Jon Ossoff, and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young. These endorsements and his extensive fundraising mark this race as one of the state’s most high-profile elections, particularly as he faces incumbent Shawn Still, who is currently under indictment for alleged interference in Georgia’s 2020 election.

NRI Ramaswami’s campaign centers around core issues such as restoring reproductive rights, enacting stricter gun safety laws, and boosting young voter turnout. He aims to repeal Georgia’s restrictive abortion laws and address lax gun regulations that threaten community safety. Viewing his youth as a strength, Ramaswami connects with younger voters in his district, many of whom see him as a representative of their interests and aspirations.

He also recognizes barriers that young voters face, especially students who may struggle to vote while away at college, and emphasizes the need to encourage first-time voters by making the process more accessible and engaging. His background in journalism underscores his commitment to transparency and accountability, values he believes are essential in both politics and the media.

In the final days leading up to the election, Ramaswami remains focused on mobilizing voters and bridging generational and community divides. His campaign represents the emergence of a new, diverse generation in American politics, committed to change, inclusivity, and community-driven progress.
