The five-member City Council of Cypress, California has approved Prakash Narain, M.D., as the new Mayor Pro Tem of Cypress, California. The vote was taken at the council meeting of December 12, 2011, at the Cypress City Council Chambers. Narain assumed his new duties immediately. He will hold the one-year term position of Mayor Pro Tem until December 2012.

Dr. Prakash Narain has served as a Cypress City Council Member for the last five years. He is the first Indian-American and first physician to be elected to this City Council, and perhaps the first Indian-American Mayor in the Southern California region.

Dr. Narain became a council member in his first attempt at public office. He was elected to the City Council in 2006. In 2009 he served as Mayor Pro Tem, and in 2010 as Mayor of Cypress. Narain won easily in his bid for reelection in November 2010, as he ran unchallenged. Since the city of Cypress has term limits, Mayor Pro Tem Narain’s second and final term will end in December 2014.

Narain stated, “It is necessary for our Indian community to become more active in their larger mainstream communities. We must encourage our youngsters to get involved in public service if we want to effect change.”

Cypress, a city of about 50,000 people, is located in Orange County in southern California. Narain’s community involvement also includes eight years on the Cypress Senior Citizens Commission. Alongside his civic responsibilities, Mayor Pro Tem Narain maintains a fulltime medical practice in Seal Beach, California.

Prakash grew up in Ranchi, India, and attended Darbhanga Medical College in Bihar. His family later settled in Patna, Bihar. In 1980 he immigrated to the United States where he specialized in internal medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chicago, and completed his geriatrics fellowship at UCLA Medical Center and the VA Westwood Hospital in Los Angeles. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Prakash and his wife, Veena, have been married 31 years and have lived in Cypress since 1987. Veena has been the campaign manager for Narain’s election bids and is also active in the local community. Their son, Sachin is specializing in anesthesiology in Miami and their daughter, Seema, is a business consultant
