For the first time in history, six NRIs were sworn in as members of the US House of Representatives on Saturday, January 4. This landmark event highlights the growing influence and active participation of the NRIs community in American politics.
A Historic Moment for NRIS
The six NRIs, who emerged victorious in the recently held elections for the House of Representatives, have collectively created history. Their presence signifies a remarkable milestone for the NRIs community, showcasing their expanding representation in the US political landscape.
Ami Bera: The Senior Statesman
Congressman Ami Bera, representing California’s 7th Congressional District, stands out as the senior-most among them. Sworn in for the seventh consecutive term, Bera reflected on the progress made since he first joined Congress.
“When I was first sworn in twelve years ago, I was the sole Indian American Member of Congress and only the third in US history. Now, our coalition is six-strong! I am excited to welcome even more Indian Americans to the halls of Congress in the years to come!” Bera shared in a post on X, along with a photograph of all six lawmakers from the House floor.
Suhas Subramanyam: The Newcomer
The newest addition to the group is Suhas Subramanyam, who represents Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. Expressing his enthusiasm, Subramanyam posted on X: “First day of work! Honoured to be sworn into the #119th Congress, and excited to get to work to deliver results for VA10,” along with a picture of himself with his family and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Pramila Jayapal: A Trailblazer
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, representing Washington’s 7th Congressional District, continues to make strides as the first-ever NRIs woman elected to the House of Representatives. Jayapal, a leader of the influential progressive lawmakers’ group, is serving her fifth consecutive term.
Shri Thanedar: Ready to Serve
Congressman Shri Thanedar, who represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, shared his excitement on X with a selfie from the House floor, stating, “Ready to serve.”
Ro Khanna and Raja Krishnamoorthi: Influential Leaders
Congressman Ro Khanna from California’s 17th Congressional District and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi from Illinois’ 8th Congressional District have both been sworn in for their fifth consecutive terms. Khanna plays a pivotal role in various House committees, while Krishnamoorthi serves as the Ranking Member of the China Committee and is a member of the House Intelligence Committee.
The Growing ‘Samosa Caucus’
These six lawmakers collectively form the informal "Samosa Caucus," a term coined by Congressman Krishnamoorthi to describe the group of Indian-origin members in Congress. The caucus has now expanded to six members, growing from its earlier strength of five.
Reflecting on the milestone, Bera recalled his vision from 2012, when he hoped to see 10 NRIs in the US House of Representatives.
A Legacy of Representation
The legacy of NRIs representation in Congress dates back to 1957, when Dalip Singh Saund became the first NRIs and the first Sikh to be elected to the House of Representatives. This historic moment further cements the contributions and presence of NRIs in shaping US policies.
