NRI Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, lawyer has been nominated by US President-elect Donald Trump as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the Department of Justice.
Sharing the news on Truth Social, Trump praised Dhillon's dedication to defending civil liberties. “Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished civil liberties, including taking on Big Tech for censoring free speech, representing Christians barred from praying together during COVID, and suing corporations employing woke policies that discriminate against workers,” Trump wrote.
NRI Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, an accomplished Indian-American lawyer and prominent Republican Party official, has been nominated by US President-elect Donald Trump to serve as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice.
Born in Chandigarh, India, in 1969, Dhillon immigrated to the United States as a child with her family. Her father, an orthopedic surgeon, moved the family to pursue his career, eventually settling in North Carolina. Dhillon excelled academically, graduating from high school at age 16 and attending Dartmouth College, where she became editor-in-chief of The Dartmouth Review. She later earned her law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where she contributed to the Virginia Law Review.
Dhillon’s legal career includes clerking for Judge Paul V. Niemeyer of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and founding the Dhillon Law Group Inc. in San Francisco. She has also served as vice chairwoman of the California Republican Party and a National Committeewoman for the Republican National Committee.
In 2018, Dhillon co-founded the nonprofit Center for American Liberty, dedicated to defending civil liberties. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she gained attention for filing lawsuits challenging stay-at-home orders and other restrictions, opposing mask mandates, and advocating for the reopening of the economy. She also voiced criticism of mail-in voting during this period.
Dhillon is a frequent guest on Fox News, where she discusses legal and political issues, and remains an influential voice in conservative circles. In January 2023, she ran for chairperson of the Republican National Committee but was defeated by incumbent Ronna McDaniel.
Her nomination to the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division highlights her ongoing prominence in legal and political spheres. If confirmed, Dhillon will lead efforts to address critical civil rights issues across the nation.
