Early Life and Education
Uppal, Born in Fartown, Huddersfield, attended Fartown High School, where she was an active member of the student council and pursued A-Level politics. She furthered her academic journey by studying politics at Nottingham Trent University and earned a master's degree in international politics from the University of Bradford.
Political Career
Before her parliamentary role, Uppal served as Deputy Chief of Staff for MP Debbie Abrahams and contributed to Andy Burnham's successful 2017 campaign for Mayor of Manchester, with Burnham later endorsing her parliamentary candidacy. Uppal was elected as a councillor for Ashbrow ward on Kirklees Council in 2018, where she chaired the Economy and Neighbourhood Scrutiny Panel, demonstrating her leadership and policy acumen until stepping down in 2022.
Selected as the Labour candidate for Huddersfield in July 2022, Uppal secured her seat in the 2024 general election with 37.6% of the vote. Her victory marked a significant milestone in Huddersfield's political landscape.
