NRI NRI Dr. Jeevun Gurpreet Singh Sandher, born in September 1990, is a British Labour Party politician who has been serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Loughborough since 2024. Sandher secured the seat from Jane Hunt with a significant swing, marking a new chapter in the constituency's political landscape.

Early Life and Education

Born in Luton, Bedfordshire, Sandher hails from a British Punjabi Sikh family with roots in Jalandhar, Punjab. His academic journey is distinguished by a PhD in Political Economy from King’s College London, obtained in 2022. Prior to this, he earned an MSc in Economic Development and Policy Analysis and a BA in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Nottingham.

Professional Career

Before entering Parliament, Sandher led the economics team at the New Economics Foundation. His professional background includes roles in HM Treasury, the Department for Work and Pensions, and an impactful stint as an economist in Somaliland’s Ministry of Finance. His expertise spans budgeting, macroeconomic policy, inequality, poverty, and social security. During his PhD studies, he co-hosted the Politics JaM podcast and actively participated in the Young Fabians.

Political Journey

Sandher was selected as Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Loughborough in December 2022. His victory in the 2024 general election was marked by an 11.8% swing from the Conservatives, with a majority of 4,960 votes and a notable increase in Labour’s vote share.

In Parliament, Sandher made his maiden speech on September 4, 2024, and was soon appointed to the Treasury Select Committee. He also chairs All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) on India and Hydrogen, reflecting his diverse interests and commitment to key global and domestic issues.

Political Stance and Initiatives

Positioned on the soft left of the Labour Party, Sandher advocates for progressive economic policies and social justice. He is a co-sponsor of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, supporting the legalization of assisted suicide, showcasing his dedication to compassionate policy-making.
