Victoria Derbyshire, a British journalist confronted Priti Patel this morning over Kemi Badenoch's recent praise for Donald Trump. In an interview with The Times in January, Badenoch, the Conservative Party leader, referred to the new US president as a "force for good in the world." This statement came before Trump caused a global stir by proposing a peace plan for Ukraine that would largely satisfy Russia’s demands, which contradicts the Western approach to the conflict.

During her appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, BBC presenter Derbyshire questioned Patel, the Tory MP and shadow foreign secretary, about her party's stance on Trump’s influence. She asked, “Do you think Donald Trump’s plan to bring President Putin in from the cold and his proposed Ukraine peace process make him a force for good in the world?”

Patel responded by stating that Trump had consistently expressed his desire for an end to the war in Ukraine. However, she cautioned that it was premature to make conclusions about the situation, noting that new talks and initiatives were still in their infancy.

Derbyshire pressed Patel further, asking whether the Conservative Party had an alternative to the US plan, which includes preventing Ukraine from joining NATO and allowing Russia to keep territory it occupies. Patel acknowledged that these views had been discussed by various people but emphasized that it should ultimately be up to Ukraine and its people to determine their future.

When Derbyshire questioned Patel’s belief in Trump's position and those of US defense officials, Patel deflected, stating it was too early to draw definitive conclusions. She stressed the importance of continuing strong support from the UK and NATO allies.
