NRI Priti Patel, Former Home Secretary, has stated she was “not happy” with immigration levels under the previous Conservative government, despite initially defending its record.

Speaking to The Sun’s Never Mind the Ballots, Patel rejected claims that her government had “thrown open the UK’s borders” but admitted more should have been done to train British workers instead of relying on foreign labour.

Her comments follow Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch’s admission last year that rising immigration was a “collective failure” and that the party had “got this wrong.” Official figures showed net migration peaked at 906,000 in the year to June 2023 before dropping to 728,000 in 2024.

Patel defended the post-Brexit points-based system, arguing it helped control immigration based on economic needs. However, she refused to apologise to voters who expected Brexit to lower immigration, stating, “I did not mislead them.”

Labour criticised Patel’s remarks as “out of touch,” while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage accused the Conservatives of a “disastrous record on immigration.”

Later, Patel posted on social media, saying the UK’s immigration system was “not fit for purpose” and that under new leadership, the party must “learn from our mistakes.”
