NRI Jasbir Singh Athwal (born September 1963) is a British Labour Party politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ilford South since July 2024. Before his tenure in Parliament, Athwal led Redbridge London Borough Council from 2014 to 2024, steering the council through transformative housing projects and political shifts.
Early Life and Career
Born in Punjab, India, Athwal immigrated to Ilford, London, at the age of seven. Overcoming language barriers and cultural shifts, he attended Mayfield School in Ilford. Athwal ventured into business, founding children’s nurseries in Derby and Essex, now owned by his wife.
Political Journey
Athwal's political career began as a councillor for Mayfield ward in 2010. By 2014, he became Redbridge Council’s first Labour majority leader, focusing on housing development and social welfare. His leadership saw Labour securing 51 out of 63 council seats in the 2018 elections.
Parliamentary Career and Controversies
Athwal faced suspension from the Labour Party in 2019 due to allegations of misconduct, which were later dismissed in 2020. Despite this setback, he secured the Labour candidacy for Ilford South in 2022 and was elected MP in 2024.
His tenure has not been without controversy. Athwal, the largest landlord in the House of Commons, faced criticism for the poor conditions of his rental properties and a connection to an underperforming care home. Despite public scrutiny, he remains an influential figure, advocating for housing reform and community welfare.
Personal Life
Athwal, a practicing Sikh, resides in Ilford with his wife and four children. He is a passionate supporter of Woodford Town FC, with a stadium stand named in his honor for his contributions to local sports development.
Athwal's career reflects a blend of community dedication, political ambition, and resilience amid personal and professional challenges.
