June is Seniors Month in Ontario, which provides an opportunity to recognize the contributions made by seniors in our community and our nation.

In celebration of Seniors Month, Dr. Dhalla recently took members of her Brampton-Springdale Seniors Council to Ottawa. Over 50 seniors participated in the day trip to Ottawa which provided seniors with the opportunity to participate in Question Period and meet with Members of Parliament and Senators and to learn about the day to day activities of Canada’s Parliament and parliamentarians. The trip was enjoyed by all seniors. Many of the seniors visited Ottawa and Canada's Parliament for the first time. Dr. Dhalla has been a strong voice for seniors and has spoken about issues impacting seniors in the House of Commons for many years. Dr. Dhalla has raised the issue of increasing accessibility to healthcare services for seniors, promoting availability of government programs and ensuring seniors have increased pensions to age with dignity and respect.

This past weekend Dr. Dhalla also joined seniors and their families at the 1st Annual Filipino Fiesta hosted in Brampton this past weekend in celebration of Filipino culture, music, and heritage. Dr. Dhalla was invited to inaugurate the Filipino fiesta with the Counsel General of the Philippines.

Recently, Dr. Dhalla was also a panellist and guest speaker at a town hall hosted for Bramptonians by the Canadian Labour Congress. Residents discussed various issues of concern including the growing rate of poverty in the Region of Peel and the need for greater affordable housing units to help families and seniors.

Dr. Dhalla also celebrated with Brampton’s Caribbean community at the United Achiever’s Club open house which celebrated the club’s 30th anniversary and their success in empowering Brampton youth and seniors with the tools and resources they need to succeed. Also celebrating their 30th Anniversary in Brampton was the Bramalea Christian Fellowship church in which Dr. Dhalla was invited as a guest speaker. Dr. Dhalla commended the hard work and dedication of founding Pastors Peter and Vera Morgan and current Pastors Randy and Jill Neilson and the congregation on their efforts to empower youth in the Brampton community.

On June 6th members of Brampton’s Heartlake Community gathered for a peaceful rally to oppose the proposed development of the high-rises in Heartlake. Dr. Dhalla attended this rally in support of her constituents who she has worked closely with to address their concerns about the impact of the proposed development of almost 1,400 unit. Since these high-rise developments were first proposed in 2007, Dr. Dhalla has worked with the Friends of Heart Lake to ensure the voices of Bramptonians are heard and their concerns about the height of the buildings increase in population density and possible negative repercussions on the surrounding green space are addressed. Dr. Dhalla joined hundreds of Bramptonians at the rally to support her constituents and voice her opposition to the high rises.

Every Friday Dr. Dhalla meets with constituents, organizations, and community groups in her office on Fridays. As a strong champion of youth, seniors, women and Brampton families Dr. Dhalla takes great pride in listening and understanding the needs and concerns of her constituents and being a strong voice on issues that are important to the Brampton community in Ottawa.  Dr. Dhalla's efforts in the riding are a reflection of her commitment to her constituents and community.  Working together we can make a difference.
