Cherie Blair honoured by Member of Parliament, Dr. Ruby Dhalla during her visit to Canada on behalf of the Loomba Foundation.

Toronto-Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale Dr. Ruby Dhalla had the pleasure of welcoming Ms. Cherie Blair, former First Lady of Britain during her visit to Canada yesterday.

Dr. Dhalla joined Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair of TD Bank Financial Group in recognizing Ms. Blair at a dinner for her global efforts to empower widows and educate children.

As the President of the Loomba Foundation Ms. Blair has traveled the world promoting equality, education, human rights and freedoms of widows and their children around the word.

Leading members of Canada's Business community, politicians, activists, and community leaders attended the dinner to learn of the work of the Loomba Foundation globally. Dr. Dhalla was also announced as the honourary patron
for the Loomba Foundation.

Launched in 1997 in Britain, the Loomba Foundation has worked with UN bodies, government officials, leaders and advocates to alleviate the plight of widows and their children worldwide who suffer prejudice, discrimination,
poverty, illiteracy and social injustice, by empowering widows and their children.

Accredited in 2008 as an NGO by the United Nations, the Loomba Foundation is currently educating children of widows in Rwanda, India, Syria, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi and South Africa.

“The work of the Loomba Foundation has given hope to thousands of widows throughout the world. By placing education at the heart of its efforts the Loomba foundation has empowered children of widows with the tools and resources they need to succeed. For the Millenium Development Goals to be achieved the 245 million widows in the world must be empowered,” said Dhalla.

"I look forward to working with Ms. Blair and the Loomba Foundation to help widows and their children and to having June 23 recognized as International Widows Day by the United Nations" said Dhalla
