U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in Washington on Thursday, focusing on trade, defense, and immigration while avoiding discussions on human rights and minority issues. Experts note that U.S. concerns over India’s human rights record have taken a backseat as India strengthens its trade ties and plays a key role in countering China.

Analysts say Trump’s foreign policy prioritizes strategic interests over values like human rights. While former President Joe Biden's administration occasionally addressed rights concerns, Trump is unlikely to press the issue.

Both leaders, seen as strong nationalists, have faced criticism from rights groups over their records. Trump has pulled the U.S. from the U.N. Human Rights Council and dismantled diversity programs, while Modi's government has been accused of policies discriminating against minorities. Modi denies these allegations, asserting that his policies benefit all citizens.

The meeting also touched on immigration, with Modi advocating for more U.S. visas for skilled Indian workers and Trump emphasizing action against illegal immigration. Meanwhile, allegations of India’s targeting of Sikh separatists abroad remain a sensitive issue in U.S.-India relations.
