US Pauses Immigrant Visa Processing Worldwide Amid Tougher Immigration Rules

The United States has temporarily paused immigrant visa appointments worldwide as the Trump administration moves to tighten immigration screening and enforcement.
The State Department says the pause is intended to allow consular officers to undergo additional training on updated guidelines, particularly regarding whether visa applicants are likely to become dependent on U.S. public benefits. The measure affects immigrant visa applicants at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world.
Applicants who already had interviews scheduled have been informed that their appointments may be postponed, with new dates expected to be announced later. The administration has not provided a firm timeline for when normal immigrant visa processing will resume, creating uncertainty for families and employment-based applicants waiting to move to the United States.
The pause comes amid a broader tightening of U.S. immigration policy. The administration is increasing scrutiny of applicants' financial circumstances and has also announced plans that could affect up to 200,000 B1/B2 business and tourist visa holders who have sought asylum after entering the country.
The latest move is expected to cause additional delays for people seeking family-based and employment-based immigrant visas. Indian applicants may be particularly concerned because some employment-based categories have already faced annual visa limits.
The policy could also face legal challenges. A federal judge recently struck down an earlier administration policy that suspended immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries, ruling that the Secretary of State had exceeded his statutory authority.
