Trump Confident India Will Act on Illegal Immigration

US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that India "will do what’s right" regarding the deportation of illegal migrants after a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This was their first conversation since Trump’s inauguration last week.

The leaders discussed immigration, security, and trade in what the White House called a "productive call." Trump confirmed Modi is likely to visit the US in February.

With an estimated 725,000 undocumented Indian immigrants in the US as of 2024, Trump’s new immigration policies have raised concerns. India’s foreign ministry has stated it will accept Indian nationals overstaying abroad, provided their identity is verified.

The discussion also covered the Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and European security, with Trump urging India to increase its procurement of US-made defense equipment and support a "fair" trade balance.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Indo-Pacific Quad alliance, with India set to host Quad leaders later this year. Despite past trade disputes under Trump's first term, Modi referred to him as a "dear friend" and emphasized their commitment to a trusted partnership.
