U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Safety, alongside Representative Deborah Ross (D-N.C.-02) and a bipartisan coalition of 43 lawmakers, have called upon the Biden Administration to swiftly intervene to safeguard more than 250,000 Documented Dreamers. These individuals, primarily children of long-term visa holders, face the risk of aging out of their dependent status, potentially leading to self-deportation if they cannot transition to another legal status.

Despite growing up in the United States with legal documentation, these children lose their dependent status upon turning 21, often due to extensive backlogs in their families' adjustment of status applications for permanent residency.

The lawmakers emphasized their previous legislative efforts, including the America’s CHILDREN Act of 2023, aimed at protecting Documented Dreamers. They urged immediate administrative action while continuing to pursue permanent legislative solutions.

Their recommendations to address the issue include clarifying the use of deferred action on a case-by-case basis, expanding eligibility for Employment Authorization, and establishing a parole process for those aging out of their dependent status under humanitarian or public benefit grounds.

The bipartisan initiative underscores ongoing efforts to address immigration reform and provide pathways to citizenship for long-term U.S. residents.
