Riverside, California devotees (over 7-8 thousand) followed the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Book revered as the Living Master atop a motorized vehicle, singing hymns (shabad kirtan), along the 2-3 mile route of the parade- ahead of the float carrying Shri Guru Granth Sahib were the Panj Piaras (the Five Beloveds- the first five disciples of the Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh, when he created Khalsa in 1699, also served free food. Langar (free food) is a unique feature of Sikhism.
Historians had said that the Sikh world had the date of Guru Nanak’s birth correct till 1816 – when the Sikhs enjoyed Khalsa Raj under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, now coincides with 14th of April 2024 marks the 555th anniversary of Guru Nanak’s birth. The Sikh world will undoubtedly get excited over the figure 555 come 15th of November 2024. Nagar means a suburb, town or city. Kirtan refers to the singing of Gurbani. Nagar Kirtan's are ways of celebrating Gurpurbs and taking the Guru Granth into the community. 100s Food Booths freely provided from floats that follow the Scripture or from stationary points in the vicinity of the procession.
