NRI Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate, is exploring the possibility of taking over the Ohio U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect JD Vance. Sources familiar with the situation disclosed that Ramaswamy, a 39-year-old entrepreneur from Cincinnati, had initially been preparing for a potential Ohio gubernatorial campaign in 2026 but is now reassessing his options.
Ramaswamy had been partnering with Elon Musk on a private initiative aimed at cutting federal government costs, reducing regulations, and streamlining operations. However, after multiple discussions with President-elect Donald Trump, Ramaswamy has shown renewed interest in the Senate position. Trump reportedly encouraged him to consider the role, aligning with Trump’s broader goal of reducing the size of the federal bureaucracy.
The deliberations remain confidential, with individuals sharing details under anonymity. Ramaswamy’s spokesperson has not issued a statement regarding the matter. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will appoint a temporary successor to Vance, who is transitioning to serve as Vice President under Trump. The appointee will hold the Senate seat until December 2026 and will need to campaign for the remaining term in the November 2026 election.
Ramaswamy previously withdrew from contention for the Senate seat to focus on leading an external project to improve government efficiency alongside Musk. However, his recent interest signals a shift in priorities. After ending his 2024 presidential campaign following a fourth-place result in Iowa, Ramaswamy endorsed Trump and became an active supporter, often headlining campaign events.
