SUBWAY, the Franchise

The Seventeen-Year-Old Entrepreneur

In 1965, Fred DeLuca borrowed $1,000 from friend Peter Buck to start "Pete's Super Submarines" in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and in the following year, they formed Doctor's Associates Inc. to oversee operations of the restaurants as the franchise expanded. The place was initially called “Pete's Super Submarines”, named after the popular submarine sandwiches at the time.... In 1968, the sandwich shop was renamed "Subway".

Today, the SUBWAY® brand is the world's largest submarine sandwich chain with more than 44,000 locations around the world.

The first store was opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965  by Fred DeLuca . Then, they set a goal of having 32 stores opened in 10 years. By 1974, the duo owned and operated 16 submarine sandwich shops throughout Connecticut. They continue to grow, guided by his passion for delighting customers by serving fresh, delicious, made-to-order sandwiches.
