Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella will earn $79.1 million in fiscal 2024, reflecting a substantial 63% increase primarily driven by stock awards. This year’s salary package marks Nadella's highest since 2014, when he earned $84 million upon assuming the CEO role. The rise highlights Microsoft's strong market position bolstered by its AI initiatives, including collaborations with OpenAI, which have played a critical role in strengthening the company's market presence and boosting Nadella’s stock-based earnings.
Stock-Based Compensation Leads Earnings Surge
Nearly 90% of Nadella’s total compensation stems from stock awards, with his stock-based earnings rising from $39 million to approximately $71 million this year. Microsoft’s exceptional market performance is mirrored in the compensation figures; over the 2024 fiscal year ending June 30, the company’s share price rose by 31.2%, pushing Microsoft’s valuation above the $3 trillion mark.
Reduction in Cash Compensation Due to Security Considerations
Amidst this increase, Nadella requested that his cash salary be reduced from $10.66 million to $5.2 million, as Microsoft grapples with cybersecurity challenges, including breaches reportedly linked to foreign actors. Following scrutiny and criticism from the US government, Nadella opted for this adjustment to emphasize his accountability.
Benchmarking Against Peer CEOs
In comparison to peers, Nadella’s adjusted 2024 earnings surpass Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, who earned $34.2 million, and Apple’s Tim Cook, who earned $63.2 million in 2023.
Microsoft Stock at Historic High
Microsoft shares hit an all-time high of $468.30 per share on July 5, 2024, underscoring the company’s continued success. As of October 24, 2024, Microsoft’s shares closed at $424.73 per share on US exchanges, reinforcing the firm’s robust financial trajectory under Nadella’s leadership.
