NRI Vinay Hiremath reached a milestone few entrepreneurs ever achieve, selling his video-messaging platform, Loom, to Atlassian for an impressive $975 million. However, beneath the surface of this monumental success lies a story of deep introspection and personal struggle. In a candid blog post titled “I’m rich and have no idea what to do with my life,” Hiremath opened up about his struggles with purpose, fulfillment, and identity in the wake of financial success.
“Life has been a haze this last year,” he wrote. “Everything feels like a side quest, but not in an inspiring way. I have infinite freedom, yet I don’t know what to do with it, and, honestly, I’m not the most optimistic about life.”
The NRI entrepreneur revealed raw details of his journey, discussing life-altering decisions like turning down a $60 million pay package, ending a two-year relationship, and failed attempts to find meaning through endeavors like robotics, mountaineering, and even a stint working alongside Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy at DOGE.
Hiremath’s road to success was anything but conventional. After dropping out of the University of Illinois, he interned at Facebook and sharpened his engineering skills at startups such as Backplane and Upthere. In 2015, he co-founded Loom with Shahed Khan and Joe Thomas, building a platform that now boasts over 25 million users across 400,000 companies globally. Despite its remarkable success, Hiremath chose to step away from Loom and its acquiring company, prioritizing personal growth over financial rewards.
Reflecting on his struggles, Hiremath admitted that Loom’s meteoric rise brought immense pressure. “When we went through our first round of layoffs, my ego was hitched to the company, and I lost myself,” he shared.
This period of self-doubt pushed Hiremath into a phase of radical experimentation. Among his bold pursuits were climbing Himalayan peaks with no prior mountaineering experience—a metaphor for his journey of navigating life’s uncertainties.
Hiremath’s story highlights an often-overlooked truth about success: while wealth and recognition may open doors, they don’t necessarily provide purpose or fulfillment. For Hiremath, the next chapter remains unwritten, but his vulnerability and self-awareness are a reminder that success is as much about inner growth as it is about external achievements.
