Indian doctor dies in Nepal highway crash

Kathmandu, Sep 18, 2010:

A 32-year-old eye doctor from eastern India died in Nepal after being injured in a highway crash.

Anjum Medi from Anil Nagar in Guwahati died in eastern Nepal after the ambulance he was travelling in hit a cement-laden truck on the highway, police said. Medi was working in the Ram Lal Golcha Eye Hospital in Biratnagar town in eastern Nepal.

He had gone to Kakarbhitta on the Indo-Nepal border to see off his wife, who had come to visit him, inspector Rudra Chudal told IANS.

While returning to Biratnagar Thursday, the ambulance he was travelling in tried to overtake a vehicle on the Mahendra Highway connecting Nepal with India and rammed into the truck coming from the opposite direction, according to preliminary police investigation.

While the driver of the ambulance, Dharmendra Chaudhary, died on the spot, Medi was seriously injured. He was rushed to the Dhopa Hospital in Dharan where he succumbed to his injuries.

Chudal said police had arrested the driver of the truck, Mausam Nepali.
