‘Rail – Roko’ protests by the BKU across the state

The recently enacted law of disallowing even peaceful protests through misuse of majority by the SAD-BJP govt. in the Vidhan Sabha, has fallen flat on the face of the junior Badal, the architect of this anti-people law in view of the ‘Rail – Roko’ protests by the BKU across the state.

As we are aware farmers throughout Punjab protested peacefully yesterday by squatting on rail tracks demanding immediate procurement of paddy. Although the congress had strongly resisted the introduction of the said bill which was draconian in nature curbing the freedom of expression and speech by not allowing any kind of demonstration or protest even if peaceful. According to the enactment all those seeking peaceful raising of their voice have to seek prior permission of the district magistrate and that he reserves the right to deny permission. Further in order to gaga, curb and intimidate any protest against the govt. the SAD-BJP amended the CRPL to make all those violating the enactment punishable by a jail term of two years. Despite resistance by the principle opposition congress party, Sukhbir Badal was able to get this draconian, anti-people and undemocratic bill passed by misusing their majority.

Now that farmers in thousands have clearly violated the newly enacted legislation, the junior Badal has no courage to initiate legal criminal proceedings against the farmers protesting yesterday. Infact the law in itself was making mockery of the constitution since expression of speech and freedom are enshrined in the fundamental rights of our constitution.

By enacting this anti people law, infact the Akali’s made a complete turnaround in their principled stand according to which they opposed emergency imposed in the country in 1976. Badal himself has throughout life been protesting, launching morcha’s and other agitations and championed the cause of human rights only to be forced into this illegitimate and unconstitutional enactment due to pressure from his son Sukhbir

The congress demands immediate scrapping of the said anti-people, draconian and unconstitutional law banning demonstrations in Punjab and calls for the intervention of the Hon’ble Governor in the matter.
