The Modi government has denied a visa to NRI Kashma Sawant, a former Seattle City Council member known for her outspoken criticism of India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Sawant claimed on social media that the denial was politically motivated, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of retaliating against her for opposing their policies. She alleged that the decision was an attempt to prevent her from visiting her ailing mother in India.
Sawant’s post on X (formerly Twitter) sparked widespread reactions as she portrayed the visa denial as part of a broader crackdown, accusing the government of targeting marginalized groups. However, Indian officials have refuted her claims, saying that the CAA aims to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries without affecting the rights of any Indian citizen.
This is not Sawant's first run-in with controversy over India. During his tenure in Seattle, he supported anti-CAA protests and introduced resolutions that were criticized for targeting Hinduism. The Indian government defended its decision, citing national security concerns and reaffirming its stance against individuals who promote divisive narratives.
