Harkirat Singh first turbaned Sikh to be appointed
as deputy mayor of Canada's Brampton city

Harkirat Singh is the first turbaned Sikh to be appointed deputy mayor of the Canadian city of Brampton for a four-year term from 2022 to 2026. He served as Brampton City Councilor for Boroughs 9 and 10 from 2018 to 2022.

As Deputy Mayor, Singh will chair Council and other committee meetings and undertake ceremonial and civic events on the Mayor’s behalf when the Mayor Patrick Brown is absent or unavailable.

Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton said :

  • “I am proud to have Councilor Harkirat Singh as Deputy Mayor of the Council during this term. He is a dedicated, hard-working Council member with a proven track record of delivering the best for Brampton,”
  • “Having served his second term as councilman and prior to that a role as school trustee, he is a well known and trusted elected official to many who I am confident will represent and serve the city of Brampton well in that role.

Established by the City of Brampton in April 2022, the position of Deputy Mayor was split into east and west portions.

About Harkirat singh

  • Singh was also the regional representative to the Ontario Public School Board Association (OPSBA).
  • In addition to his role as Trustee, he spent two and a half years as a Professor at Lambton College and two years as a Professor at Humber College teaching Marketing & Entrepreneurship.
  • To encourage community development, Singh hosts mentoring workshops and career fairs in local schools.
  • In 2016 he was nominated for a mentoring award by the Brampton Board of Trade for his youth work.
  • He has a BA from the University of Toronto, where he majored in Economics and Public Administration.
  • He is MSc in Economics from London Metropolitan University and has an MBA from the Schulich School of Business specializing in Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Organizational Behaviour.
