Atishi was inaugurated as Delhi's youngest Chief Minister on Saturday, succeeding Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned earlier this week. In a ceremonial meeting prior to the oath-taking, she gathered her Cabinet members, including Mukesh Ahlawat, Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, Kailash Gahlot, and Saurabh Bharadwaj.
Her tenure will be short, as elections are set for February to appoint a new Chief Minister. During his time in office, Kejriwal faced significant legal issues, including a Supreme Court ruling that barred him from signing documents or entering his office. He has urged that the elections be held in November, aligned with the polls in Maharashtra.
In a recent statement, Kejriwal challenged the public to consider his guilt or innocence, criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party for attempting to undermine him. “The only asset I have is my honesty,” he emphasized.
Kejriwal was granted bail by the Supreme Court last week after being arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the excise policy controversy. He has been in Tihar Jail since March due to money laundering allegations tied to the 2021-22 liquor policy, which was later revoked by the Lieutenant Governor. The Enforcement Directorate has claimed that money from liquor vendors was used to support AAP’s campaign in Goa, where Kejriwal is the convenor.
