The Patiala police have registered a case against
four persons for allegedly kidnapping and raping an
NRIs wife, here today. Surjit Singhs wife
was reportedly kidnapped and raped by his friend Shashi
and his three friends.
Sources in police said Surjit Singh had moved to
South Africa in 2001, while his wife, who was staying
at Jalandhar, moved to her paternal house in Ambala
after her husband left India. She had been staying
with her brother since.
Meanwhile, Shashi got in touch with Surjit Singh
wife and according to police sources he lured her
with arranging a job for her in the Punjabi University.
Shashi contacted the woman last morning and asked
her to come to Punjabi university in order to speak
to one of the senior functionaries of the university,
who he said would help her get the job.
The sources said when the NRIs wife reached
the varsity gate, Shashi along with three friends,
asked her to get into a car and from there they took
her to a house in Jalalpur village. There the four
raped her and later administered some intoxicant to
her. The four then abandoned the woman on a road in
Chaura village near Punjabi University.
This morning, the villagers spotted the woman, who
was lying unconscious there, and took her to a private
nursing home.
However, the doctors at the nursing home refused
to attend to the patient as it was a police case and
asked the villagers to take her to the Government
Rajindra Hospital. There, the doctors informed the
police following which a case under the relevant sections
of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the
four persons.
Though nobody was arrested till the filing of this
report, it is learnt that the police has launched
an operation to track down the accused who are absconding
ever since the incident.
