NRI Periyasamy Mathiyazhagan, was sentenced to nine weeks in jail after failing to return $25,000 mistakenly transferred into his bank account. The 47-year-old man admitted to using the funds to settle his personal debts and sending some money to his family in India.
The mistake occurred on April 6, 2023, when an administrator at the plumbing and engineering firm where Periyasamy worked from 2021 to 2022 accidentally transferred the money to his account, believing it was the company’s account. Upon realizing the error, the administrator attempted to recover the funds with the help of the bank but was unsuccessful.
Despite receiving a letter about the erroneous transfer, which was mistakenly sent to his former company, Periyasamy did not return the money. Instead, he transferred the $25,000 across four transactions in May. When confronted by his employer, Periyasamy admitted he had spent the money to pay off debts.
A police report was filed in May, and during a police interview in November 2023, Periyasamy confessed to remitting a portion of the money to his family. He later pleaded guilty to misappropriating the funds and was sentenced to jail for his actions.
