As tech sector layoffs continue, an emotional video by an Indian-origin software engineer in the U.S. has sparked widespread discussion on social media. The engineer shares his experience of discovering that his job was outsourced to workers in India.
The video begins with the engineer introducing himself and detailing how his entire team was laid off. During his exit interview, he was shocked to learn that his company was replacing his team with cheaper labor in India. He had hoped his Indian heritage might protect his job.
"I told them, 'I'm already Indian. Why not keep me and hire my friends?' I explained that I was born in India and my family moved to the U.S. for work," he said, expressing disbelief.
The company's response was direct. "They told me, 'No, you don't understand. We're moving these jobs to India where they can be done more cheaply.' In that moment, I felt like every father who has ever complained about jobs being outsourced. I thought, 'Damn, Indians are taking our jobs,'" he recounted in the video.
Captioned "Indian software engineer is laid off and replaced by... Indians," the video has garnered over 3 million views on X (formerly Twitter), 34,000 likes, and numerous comments.
One user remarked, "He doesn't get it. He's being laid off because he's too costly."
