A recent report by the International Educational Exchange highlighted that India surpassed China as the top source of international students in the US during the 2023-2024 academic year, with a record 331,602 Indian students. This marks a 23% increase from the previous year.
“The growth of Indian youth and their enthusiasm for education and opportunities in the US are significant pull factors,” said Marvin Krislov, President of Pace University. “The large Indian-American community adds to the appeal, providing a sense of connection and support. Many Indians who come here for education have found tremendous success.”
Indian enrolments have seen significant growth at the graduate (196,567, up 19%) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) academic levels (97,556, up 41%), according to the report.
Raj Echambadi, President of Illinois Tech, pointed to two main reasons for the increase.
“First, the quality of Indian students is exceptionally high. Nearly 60% of them, about 200,000, are in graduate programs, primarily in STEM fields, making the US a natural fit for their aspirations,” he explained.
“Second, from a geopolitical perspective, the strong relationship between the US and Indian governments in recent years has made America a more attractive destination compared to countries like China,” Echambadi added.
The US remains a preferred choice over other countries like Australia, the UK, and Canada for Indian students, who are increasingly seeking global opportunities, Echambadi said.
“This reflects a thirst for globalisation among Indian students, who see international education as a direct pathway to success,” he noted.
Illinois Tech has experienced a 69% increase in Indian students over the past five years, with more than 2,000 currently enrolled across its campuses in Chicago.
Similarly, Pace University has seen significant enthusiasm among Indian students. “We currently host over 2,000 Indian students and maintain strong ties with India, including collaborations with institutions like O.P. Jindal Global University,” Krislov said.
These partnerships aim to foster academic exchange and collaborative research. “Reciprocity is growing, enhancing educational experiences for all and opening doors to productive international research,” he added.
Both educators agree that the United States remains well-positioned as a top destination for Indian students, with ample opportunities for growth and collaboration in the years to come.
