Rick Harper, 73, was en route to his overnight shift when he witnessed the crash scene. Seeing the burning vehicle, Harper and other bystanders tried to assist, using a fire extinguisher and breaking a back window with a metal bar to pull the young woman to safety. Harper, who later learned of the fatalities, described her as visibly traumatized but unharmed.
Electric Vehicle Fire Challenges First Responders
Fire officials and police are investigating the causes of the crash and fire, with initial concerns that the Tesla’s battery cells exacerbated the fire’s intensity. Toronto Fire is adapting protocols to address such situations, as fires in electric vehicles like Tesla often require extensive water to control.
