NRI Salman Rushdie to Face Attacker in Court as Trial Begins

NRI Salman Rushdie, Acclaimed author, is set to testify in the trial of Hadi Matar, the man accused of attempting to kill him during a 2022 attack at the Chautauqua Institution. The trial marks the first time Rushdie, 77, will come face-to-face with Matar since the stabbing, which left him partially blind and with permanent hand injuries.
Matar, 27, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault. The trial, expected to last up to 10 days, will present video and photo evidence from the attack, in which Matar stabbed Rushdie more than a dozen times before being subdued by onlookers.
Federal authorities have also charged Matar with terrorism-related offenses, alleging he was motivated by a fatwa against Rushdie, originally issued in 1989 by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini and later endorsed by Hezbollah. A separate federal trial on these charges will follow.
Rushdie, known for novels such as Midnight’s Children and Victory City, recounted his ordeal in his memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder, released last year.
