The mother of Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former researcher at OpenAI who was found dead after publicly accusing the company of violating copyright laws, has alleged that her son was murdered. Poornima Rao, the grieving mother, is calling for an FBI investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Rao has stated that the authorities’ conclusion that her son’s death was a suicide is deeply flawed. “Suchir’s death is a cold-blooded murder declared by authorities as suicide,” she wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). She revealed that a private autopsy commissioned by the family contradicted the findings of the initial police report. Furthermore, Rao noted that Suchir’s apartment in San Francisco appeared to have been “ransacked,” with evidence of a struggle in the bathroom and blood spots suggesting he had been struck.
"We hired a private investigator and conducted a second autopsy to shed light on the cause of death. The private autopsy does not confirm the cause of death stated by police. Suchir’s apartment was ransacked, there were signs of a struggle in the bathroom, and it looks like someone hit him there based on blood spots," she wrote.
Rao also accused local authorities of bias. “Lobbying in San Francisco city doesn’t stop us from getting justice. We demand an FBI investigation,” she asserted.
Elon Musk responded to Poornima Rao’s post, writing, “This doesn’t seem like a suicide.”
Suchir Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment months after accusing OpenAI of violating copyright laws in the development of ChatGPT. According to Fox News, the San Francisco Police Department ruled his death a suicide, citing no evidence of foul play. However, his mother’s allegations have cast doubt on the official narrative.
