An Indian Student “ Mohammad Abdul Arfath “Found Dead in Cleveland, US: Second Tragic Incident within a Week
The Indian community overseas mourns yet another heartbreaking loss as 25-year-old Mohammad Abdul Arfath, a student from Nacharam, Hyderabad, was discovered deceased in Cleveland, Ohio. Arfath, who had been missing since last month, was pursuing a Master's degree in IT at Cleveland University since May of the previous year.
Expressing profound sadness, the Consulate General of India in New York offered condolences to Arfath's family and pledged active cooperation with local authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.
"Deeply saddened by the news of Mr. Mohammed Abdul Arfath's discovery in Cleveland, Ohio," the Consulate General of India in New York conveyed in a statement.
Arfath's disappearance had prompted a joint effort between Indian officials and US law enforcement agencies to locate him swiftly. However, hopes were shattered with the tragic news of his passing, leaving his family devastated.
The distressing situation escalated when Arfath's father, Mohammed Saleem, received a terrifying phone call from an unidentified individual claiming Arfath's abduction by a drug trafficking gang. The caller demanded a ransom of $1,200 for his release, with threats of organ trafficking further tormenting the family.
"I received a call from an unknown number informing me of my son's kidnapping and demanding money. The caller refused to allow me to speak with my son," Saleem revealed to PTI in Hyderabad.
Saleem, along with Arfath's grieving parents, urged the Central government for swift intervention, reaching out to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for assistance.
This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of another unsettling event within the Indian community abroad, with the recent loss of Uma Satya Sai Gadde, another Indian student whose demise in Ohio remains under investigation.
As the Indian community grapples with the loss of two promising lives, concerns regarding the safety and support of international students in the US demand urgent attention from authorities on both sides.
